British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several entry passages down to the site... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
