Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People using such treatments must be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs report a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
