Australia's captain Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
